About the Sites
Most of the 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans forcibly removed from the West Coast during the spring and summer of 1942 were sent to concentration camps—ten prison camps with military-style barracks and armed guards, located in remote and isolated parts of the country. Incarceration usually began with a stay of about three months in temporary Assembly Centers located at racetracks, fairgrounds, and stockyards while arrangements for the camps were made.
More than 5,500 Japanese nationals (Issei) were held in numerous temporary Immigration Detention Stations, Department of Justice Internment Camps, and U.S. Army Internment Camps.
While no mass removal and incarceration occurred in Hawai‘i, approximately 1,200 Japanese and Japanese Americans were arrested on the islands and held at various detention centers. Most were eventually sent to mainland concentration camps until the war ended.
